For global in-house counsel, supporting business transactions across borders is a way of life. Managing the work volume is a tremendous challenge, as is keeping up with the myriad of local and regional regulations and regulatory bodies. There is a high level complexity to global corporate work, many players and parties to deal with, and never enough time or resources.
There is greater demand for data gathering and reporting on compliance, and the role of risk management increasingly falls to the global law department. Global counsel are valued for their expert strategic advice and judgment, and as the company invests in major expansion they can be influential navigators. Additionally, global counsel must have an eye on the horizon regarding developing regulatory issues. At the same time, they must be able to immediately investigate and respond to issues or disputes that might damage the company's reputation.
Managing corporate legal services across multiple jurisdictions requires an expanded set of skills and knowhow, and the judgment and experience to know where and when to seek outside advice.
